History
Dr. Portfolio, Sr. began his practice in Ridgewood, NJ in 1956 near Wilsey Square. After moving a few times, he settled into 20 Wilsey Square, which he and his partners converted from a gas station/parking garage into a medical building called the C. F. Post Building.
As the population grew, parking became more and more difficult. Dr Portfolio, Sr. partnered with other local physicians to build the Bergen Medical Center on the corner of West Ridgewood Avenue and Route 17. The office was moved in 1987.
Before beginning his career, Dr. Portfolio, Sr. had completed residencies in pathology at the Cleveland Clinic, and ophthalmology at NYU. He had also served two years in the army, mostly stationed at Fort Campbell, KY, where he served as an ophthalmologist. He was director of the ocular motility clinic at Bellevue Hospital for over 25 years, and attained the title of Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology.
Remembered as the consummate gentlemen, Dr. Portfolio, Sr., retired in the fall of 1992 because of illness, and died in August of 1993. He is sorely missed by both family and patients.
Dr. Portfolio, Jr. joined his father in the practice after completing his own residency at NYU. They worked together for over 10 years. Dr. Portfolio, Jr. was responsible for getting the practice involved in laser vision correction, and small incision cataract surgery. It’s truly amazing to witness the progress in ophthalmology in the last 30 years.Today, Dr. Portfolio, Jr. is a senior Attending Physician at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at New York Medical College. He is involved in the clinical training of eye residents, as well surgical training. He was awarded the Distinguished Teacher of the Year in 2007.
Today, Dr. Portfolio, Jr., carries on the traditions started by his father: professionalism, excellence, and treating the patient with the utmost care and respect.
